‘Race’ Up your Sporty Side! (BMW 530d M Sport)

If you have experienced the BMW 5 Series, get ready to race it up with the sports version of the sedan

The recently launched upgraded version of BMW’s popular 5 Series, has added an M Sports Package. We get behind the wheels to figure out whether it’s just a cosmetic upgrade or potent enough to be a mechanical advance over its predecessor.

Exterior
This latest generation of the 5 Series offers an enhanced exterior design, which now comprises of a larger front grille, chrome surrounds for front fog lamps, re-carved lower air intakes, along with a front and rear apron, and a pair of sleeker tail lamps. Its 18 inch alloy wheels and turn indicator integrated with the side view mirrors, further help in bringing out its overall design.

Interior
Having altered its exterior design, BMW has also spruced up the interiors of this sports model, in order to provide a better level of comfort than before. The first step towards this direction is the inclusion of a new instrument cluster that lights up in red, the moment you slide it into the sports mode. Conversely, the comfort and eco pro driving mode caters to an analog meter. What’s more, the German automaker has gone and improvised the car’s drive system, which now features a bigger 25.8 cm display, along with a track pad available on the controller. This is quite useful for the end user. Two LCD screens for rear passengers comes as a standard fitment. In this version of the 5 Series, the front seats offer better thigh support, with the rear seats providing ample comfort to the passengers.

Engine
There are no drastic changes under the hood; however what has changed is the sedan’s performance output, which now offers 12 bhp more than the previous generation. The torque figure remains the same.

Verdict
5 Series has been one of the bestsellers for BMW and this one is no exception. It is improvised both on the inside as well as the outside, giving it an immense appeal. Its performance is the icing on the cake, completing the package on the whole.

The King of Off-Roading

Ford Endeavour, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuner battle it out to
determine who is the real champ of off-roading

When you go to buy a SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle), what is it exactly that you look out for? Drive, space, comfort or is there something else that fires your imagination? Well for me, it was the “off-road” experience that mattered when I set out to review Ford Endeavour, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuner. So, let’s find out who comes out on top when faced with some serious mud and slush bashing.

Ford Endeavour

The Ford Endeavour has been one of the forerunners ever since its launch back in 2003. Its sheer muscular appearance and massive ground clearance have been its main attractions. Having said that, its updated looks, especially the face lifted front end, does add character. But somehow, when it comes to the drivability factor, especially off-road, the experience isn’t that great. When I took it through an open field run, the Endeavour failed to impress me in the handling department. Its overall ride quality feels a bit compromised, while rest of the features, such as space and comfort, are fairly satisfactory.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport
The latest generation of Pajero Sport scores high on the style and brand quotient meter. Its curvaceous exterior appeal will surely fascinate onlookers, but its real USP is the positive attitude to go anywhere and tackle any sort of terrain quite successfully. The interiors are up-to-date and the comfort factor does not go unnoticed. Having said that, the car’s heavy steering does make city commuting a bit of an issue. However, highway cruising is more suitable for long trips.

Toyota Fortuner
This is one of the most sought after 4 wheelers in the market. Its modern looks, interior space and current features on offer, make it one of the most preferred SUVs around. Its on and off-road capabilities have won it novice as well as hardcore off road enthusiasts. To be precise, its handling and ride characteristics are quite smooth, no matter what comes in its way. Be it city roads or the highway, the Fortuner will not fail to impress you with its on and off-road capabilities.

Verdict
Comparing all three machines on just hardcore off-road capability, it would be Mitubishi Pajero Sport on top, followed by the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. However, since a country like ours is price sensitive, the Endeavour would top the list due to its cheaper price tag, with Fortuner coming in at second, and Pajero Sport at third. On sheer passion and experience, we feel that the Toyota Fortuner is an ideal fit for both on and off-road utilization, as the Pajero Sport comes closest as the next best option.

BMW 1 Series

Style meets Substance

BMW’s 1 series, which is its latest entrant into the premium small car segment, aims to lure car enthusiasts with its stylish looks, power-packed features and top notch performance. We give you a lowdown about this new mean machine.

Exterior
Its dynamic front end sports the signature BMW lines with a kidney-shaped grille, a long bonnet and twin-barrel headlamps with strong shoulder lines. The rear is proportionate to the overall design, highlighting its elegant LED tail lamp clusters.

Interior
Smart is the word that defines the car’s centre console, which is aligned towards the driver. The instrument cluster is neat, with large and clear dials. Touches of metal finish provided to the pedals, along with chunky door handles, further brings out the sportiness from within, as this is the top of the line 118d sports variant. Front and rear seats are really comfortable, with decent amount of head, shoulder and leg room.
Performance
The BMW 1 series offers one petrol (116i) and one diesel (118d) engine. The petrol variant features a  4 cylinder turbocharged 1.6 ltr engine, and the one we drove wasthe 2.0 ltr diesel engine that produces 141bhp with 320 Nm of torque. It caters to an eight speed ZF gearbox that powers the rear wheels, giving the vehicle the flavour of a powerful yet enjoyable hot hatch. There are four driving modes to choose from, out of which, Eco pro which is for economical driving, while City cruising provides for a comfortable ride. Having said that, the Sport and Sport Plus are two modes where the 118d really comes alive and is a pleasure to drive.

Verdict
The BMW 1 Series is the first of its kind offering from the German manufacturer that attempts to sell well in the premium car segment. It offers a strong line up of engines that provide good driving dynamics, thereby satisfying the thrill of a hardcore car enthusiast. This hatchback is well packaged and well suited for daily use. However, the cabin isn’t really special, but still provides a reasonable amount of comfort. Given that all BMWs are driver centric, its pricing is something that can keep away many positional customers, in comparison to the rest of the competition.

On the comparative scale

Mercedes A Class is the nearest and the only rival to the BMW 1 series. It provides a more premium and flush look, especially if you talk about its exterior design. When compared visually, the front end of the A Class immediately stands out to the naked eye in comparison to the 1 series. While the finishing of both set of wheels is almost equal, the cabin of the A Class is far more superior to that of the 1 Series. Rear leg room is something that is non-existent in the Beemer, while Merc still provides reasonable space. From the driving point of view, the 1 series comes out on top, as it provides better handling and performance in comparison to the A Class. To sum it up, if one is looking for a ride with basic interior layout and space, then the 1 series is the best choice. But, if blingy and sporty interiors with decent performance is your cup of tea, then you should go for the A Class.

Royal Enfield Continental GT

Swinging the throttle, 60s style

This bike fest made you sing Roger Miller's Bobbies on bicycles — Bobbies on motorbikes, actually — right at the outset. Remember the swinging London of the sixties, with its scooter boys and skinheads and beatniks and hippies? The Re-launch of RE Continental GT tour that I was on, was nothing short of going right down the time machine to that magical era of psychedelic rock, retro rev-ups, Beatles and Pink Floyd and The Whos and what not!

In a recent tour to the United Kingdom to experience the legends racing legacy, I, along with other media persons, was taken around the streets of London where music, art and manufacturing flourished during the 1960s to give a feel of the rich heritage of the place around that time.

The Continental GT motorbike, which was introduced by Royal Enfield way back in 1965, was a culmination of modern and retro styling, which made it ever so popular and a known model for racing rather than just cruising. For those who are novice to its history, when started, the company produced bicycles, lawnmowers, motorcycles and stationery engines under the name ‘Enfield Cycle Company’, but in the year 1980, it was given the name ‘Royal Enfield’. Belonging to the 250cc category, the Continental GT was ahead of its time due to its retro styling and swift/good performance. It was the fastest racing bike manufactured by the company during that period, and became a cult and something of a nostalgic value. Racing bikes from one cafe to another was a popular phenomenon in Britain in those days, as riders earlier subjected to modifying bikes and then racing them. This culture instantly caught on and became a symbol of a new breed of motorcycles called 'Cafe Racers'. Now, with the Cafe Racer, things became really very simple and fast.

The design inspiration comes from the swinging 60’s, which was an era that saw many changes in both the society as well as industrial output. Fashion was at its peak, with British youth deriving the most out of it due to an increased disposal income which was an effect of the growing economy. Bands like The Who, The Kinks and The Rolling Stones were making serious in-roads into the music arena where a genre like rock and roll was really catching the imagination of the people. Therefore, the Cafe Racer was an association to music and fashion, keeping its racing breed in mind.

A crucial part of this tour was the visit to The National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, which offers the finest and largest collection of bikes in the UK. It is important from Royal Enfield’s perspective, as it houses the first bike manufactured by the company along with the popular Continental GT.

Therefore, the Continental GT has been re-created by Royal Enfield. It carries forward the retro styling from the 60’s — a red elongated tank, wide handle bars, a circular headlamp, chrome highlighted front and rear fenders, plus a humped back seat attribute to heritage design. While the beast under the frame is a 535cc engine that produces 29.1bhp at 5100rpm of maximum power, 4.49kgm of peak torque at 4000rpm. It comes with a 5 speed gearbox. The shifts are smooth with one-down and four-up. On tarmac, the Continental GT is fast, considering its top speed is 150 kmph, while a comfortable ride can be achieved at around 100 kmph. The much anticipated humped back seat is very comfortable, as it is soft and wide, thus enabling a good seating posture. As for the riding position, the foot pegs aren’t far behind, with an easy reach for the handle bars. Its ride, as a whole, is firm, courtesy front telescopic forks, while the handling is spot on, as the bike feels more than capable taking on curves and turns with ease. Featuring 18 inch rims, the GT catered to (100/90) section Prelli tyres in the front, while the rear offered 130/70. Its front and rear disc brakes work well to get the bike in control as all times.

Expected to be launched in November 2013, we predict that the much awaited Continental GT could demand a price between Rs 2 - 2.25 lakhs. It’s a legend that commands respect with all attributes of true racing breed that can only be saluted for what it’s worth.

Serving as a stopover for bikers, the Ace Cafe played a big role in shaping up the genesis of the racing culture. These bikers were also called 'Cafe Racers' thanks to this trend.

(My visit to London was sponsored by Royal Enfield)

(Bobbies on bicycles… we are humming while zooming along the streets astride the reincarnation of the Continental GT, the iconic bike of iconic-maker Royal Enfield (RE) that graced London roads in the 1960s. Perhaps the song should have been ‘Bobbies on motorbikes’.
We are in London for the relaunch of the Continental GT, and this is nothing short of that magical era of psychedelic rock, retro rev-ups, Beatles and Pink Floyd — and of course the mad bike races from café to café that spawned the genre of “café racers”.

When Enfield launched the Continental GT back in 1965, it had a 250cc engine, and was seen as ahead of its time with to its retro styling that belied its buzzing motor. It was the fastest racing bike manufactured by the company in that period, and became something of a cult figure at a time when biking fashion was at its peak, and British youth had more money to spend, an effect of the growing economy.

The new Continental GT carries forward the typical café racer from the 60s — an elongated tank, wide handle bars, a circular headlamp, chrome highlights, and the humped racing seat.

The engine has grown: it is now powered by RE’s 535cc UCI engine that produces peak power of 29.1bhp and peak torque of 44Nm. We managed to hit nearly 150 kph, though the bike feels more comfortable at about 100 kph. The gearbox is 5-speed gearbox — one-down and four-up.

The seat is very comfortable, soft and wide, the foot pegs well positioned and the handle bars within easy reach. As a whole, the bike rides firm, and the handling is spot on. The bike feels more than capable of taking on curves and turns.

Featuring 18 inch rims, the GT is shod with (100/90) section Pirelli tyres in the front, and 130/70 at the rear. True to its racing legacy, the bike has disc brakes on the front and rear that are sufficient for the form.

Expected to be launched in November 2013, the Continental GT is likely to command a price of Rs. 2-2.25 lakh. It is a legend, and going by RE fan forums, a lot of people out there are already putting aside cash in anticipation of its arrival.

Royal Enfield is on the upswing these days, but there has not been any real new product from the stable. With the Continental GT it is looking to plug this gap. Whether the bike up to the expectation, and sales match the hype, is to be seen.)

Mercedes Benz E-Class

Luxury meets style

The latest generation of the Mercedes Benz E-Class maintains its luxurious features, but adds oodles of style and glamour to its profile

It’s younger, sportier, aggressive and bold. Meet the new Mercedes Benz E-Class, which aims to add a touch of sophistication to its already luxurious avatar. We take a sneak peek to determine the car’s qualities and to find why it is one of the most preferred models in the Mercedes Benz India lineup.

Sharp Exteriors
The new front end features a prominent grille with an inserted star and composite LED head lamp clusters. The side caters to a longer profile, courtesy a sharp edged line that runs right across from the front to the rear along with elegant looking five-spoke 18 inch alloy wheels. The rear offers a newly shaped bumper, with chrome finished dual tail pipes and a pair of freshly designed tail lights.

Fun Interiors
In terms of design, there aren’t many changes, except a new analogue clock that can be found in the center of the dash, along with a bigger COMAND screen, which offers a higher resolution than before. In terms of comfort, the rear seats offer an improved under-thigh-support than before. Overall, the cabin comes across as spacious, bright and very airy.

Performance
Mercedes Benz is currently offering only two engine variations on the E - Class, which comprise of E250 CDI and E200 petrol. We tested the E250 CDI, which is a diesel variant. The drive is refined and very comfortable. This sedan caters to two different driving modes — Economy and Sport. In economy mode, the engine behaves normally, thereby resulting in better fuel efficiency. In the Sports variant, it goes ballistic on just a tap of the accelerator. If you really wish to rev the machine hard, you might be disappointed, as the gear box is not quick. But even then, driving within the city or overtaking on the highway isn’t difficult. The feature of a start-stop button is an added benefit for the purpose of saving fuel.

Verdict
The new E-Class is high on looks, while comfort complements the stature of being a premium sedan. Its popularity in the Indian market is a testament of the fact that it has arrived to woo auto lovers, who crave for a radical design and optimum functionality.

Volvo V40 Cross Country

A Class Apart

With looks that can make heads turn and a high comfort factor,
the Volvo V40 Cross Country seems like a classy ride

V for vibrant. Yes, that’s precisely the term that I would like to use to describe Volvo’s latest creation — the V40 Cross Country. A bigger version of a hatchback, the V40 Cross Country brings forward an aggressive exterior design with comfort and safety features that are to be felt and experienced. To do that, we recently got our hands on this Swedish machine.

If you talk about looks, this particular vehicle just breaks away from everything else existing within its segment. It’s an instant head turner, especially due to its front, which portrays a sloping sculpted bonnet, a honeycomb mesh grille, along with vertical fog lamps. A sharp line originates all the way from the front to the rear, thereby highlighting its side profile with a pair of black side view mirrors along with elegant 17 inch alloys. Unlike the front, the rear tail gate has a radical appearance, courtesy a contrasting rear bumper, skid plates and oval shaped tail lights. The interiors are equally classy, with a full-length sunroof, and a waterfall like center console that houses a 8 inch screen without navigation.

Performance
The car is high on the comfort factor, as there is ample of space in the front as well as the rear. In fact, three people can be easily accommodated at the back, which is a good thing. The V40’s engine is very responsive, with the automatic transmission handing out good shifts. The ride is brilliant and it seems Volvo has studied a lot about Indian road conditions, as the suspension is tuned in such a way that going over pot holes and broken road surfaces isn’t really an issue. The handling too is really impressive.

Verdict
All in all, we would say that the Volvo V40 Cross Country is a vibrant product with features that create quite a noise (40 decibels to be precise). It brings to you brilliant looks, comfort factor, driving enjoyment and most importantly, safety, which is one of its most important credentials.

Hyundai i20 vs Maruti Swift

Battle of hatches

One is more stylish, the other trustworthy... and what about the ride?
We help you decide between the top two hatchbacks

Curious to know which hatch to go in for in the diesel segment? We’ve made things simpler for you by comparing the top two contenders in B+ hatchback segment — Maruti Swift and Hyundai i20. Here’s what we feel.

Exteriors
Swift has an aggressive look, thanks to its front fascia features — large headlamps, a prominent front grille and fog lamps. The side profile has body-coloured door handles and flared wheel arches, while the rear, with its short overhang, caters to new tail lamp clusters, a sportier tail gate and a large bumper.

i20, on the other hand, follows Hyundai’s Fluidic Design Philosophy, which caters to a classic yet trendy look altogether. It looks elegant with a pointed nose catering to stretched-back headlamps, a plastic front grille and clear fog lamp clusters. Its sides are highlighted by a sharp line rising from the front, going all the way to its rear. The tailgate features stylish tail lamp clusters, and reflectors within the bumper.

Interiors
Both the cars have swish interiors. While Swift boasts of a chic centre console as its highlight, i20 has a more luxurious look. Also, it comes loaded with features like a start/stop button, panoramic sunroof (optional), and bluetooth connectivity.

Ride and handling
As for the on-road experience, there’s not much of a difference in both the hatches — the ride is smooth even on bumpy roads, the gear-shifts are jerk-free, and the handling is strong. Also, the cars are economical when it comes to fuel consumption. However, the engine noise and a bit of vibration are the areas where both  machines need some enhancements.

Verdict
Swift, being a Maruti product, has a brand image like no other, and has better resale value. It also requires low maintenance and gave us a good average of around 20kmpl. Hyundai i20, on the other hand, may not have as good a resale value, but is equally low-maintenance. We got an average of around 18kmpl from this hatch that’s high on comfort and comes with luxurious features, the kind you would otherwise find in high-end cars.

Mercedes-Benz A Class

‘A’ for attraction

With its killer looks and three different modes on offer — economy, sports and manual, the Mercedes A Class is a good but expensive buy

Be its striking good looks or its superior performance, the Mercedes A Class sets the tone for premium hatchbacks in the country. It is the first of its kind, but given the Indian consumer’s mindset, whether it will make an impression on them or not is something that we are just about to find out.At first glance, its intriguing front end has one asking for more, especially the prominent grille with diamond shaped chrome inserts and elongated LED headlamps. Its coupe like profile further accentuates the design along with flared wheel arches, elegant looking alloys and side view mirrors with indicator inserts. As for the rear of the car, it is proportionate to the overall design, bringing forward LED tail lamp clusters.

With the exterior design being spot on, one would expect the cabin to offer something special. Unfortunately, typical of all Mercedes Benz cars, there are a hoard for buttons to play around with, keeping the central console in mind. However, the air conditioning vents look dynamic, giving the interiors a bit more of substance. Comfortable and sporty leather seats further enhance the in-house experience, though the lack of leg space at the back does play spoilsport.

Since this was a sports variant, it featured a 1.6 litre petrol engine under the skin that produces a maximum power output of 122 bhp with 200 Nm of torque. Besides the petrol version, Mercedes is also offering a 2 litre diesel engine on the A Class for customers who are more economy conscious. With a seven speed automatic transmission on board, the gear shift are more or less decent. However, with three different modes on offer —economy, sports and manual, the user does get to experience different characteristics of this machine depending upon the requirement. But, extensive noise vibrations from the engine, as well lack of insulation for the horn, does pose discomfort to the occupants.

Verdict
The attempt by Mercedes to offer the latest generation A Class does put into context the German manufacturer’s need to capture a new segment. But its hefty price tag and a repetitive cabin might sour the customers’ mindset, which however can be resolved by its exemplary exterior design.

Ford Eco Sport

Get ready for a ‘muscular’ ride

With its bold and stylish looks, as well as its superior performance,
the Ford Eco Sport is quite a trendy option for the urbane user

Ford Eco Sport has been one of the most awaited sub-4 metre compact SUVs for quite some time. The car is an attempt to provide urban customers with an SUV that has bold looks, an aggressive stance, comfort, and, on and off road capability.

It is after a very long time that a SUV like this has come in the market. Eco Sport has a dynamic appearance due to its front end, which provides a sculpted bonnet, slim headlamp clusters and chrome surrounded fog lamps. Its muscular profile stretches all the way from the front to the rear, with the sides offering flared wheels arches, roof rails and sporty alloys. A mounted spare wheel and elegant looking tail lamps highlight the rear.

It’s not just the SUV’s exteriors that are stylish and sporty, its interiors are equally eye-catching. Though the front dash is pretty similar to that of the Fiesta in terms of features, this compact SUV however offers additional elements such as Microsoft’s SYNC system, voice command, a start stop button, to name a few. The seating position up front is appropriate for the driver and co-passenger, while the rear offers a decent amount of head, leg and shoulder room.

Performance
To begin with, it features a 1.0 litre petrol engine, also known as EcoBoost. It is probably the smallest engine offering in a compact SUV, which churns out 125 ps of power with 170 Nm of torque. Considering the size and power delivery, the Eco Sport did surprise us, as it performed well both within the city and the highway. The 5 five speed manual transmission works well to hand out perfect gear shifts. All in all, this petrol variant returns a fuel economy of 16 kmpl, which we think, is really impressive.

Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Verna & Honda City

Ready to go automatic?

Cars with automatic transmission are not beyond your reach anymore.
If you’re game for the change, here’s a lowdown

Do you find yourself going crazy every time you’re held up in a traffic snarl? Hate tiring your hands and feet changing gears when you are helplessly stuck at red lights during peak hours? Well, maybe it’s time you switch over to cars with automatic transmission. With an increased per capita income, vehicles of such nature are no more out of reach for individuals. Their USP is their functionality, handling and performance. We give you a heads up on three automatic sedans. So, get ready to zoom down the road with our top picks.

Hyundai Verna

Its biggest plus point is the use of a start/stop button, which helps in enhancing the sedan’s functionality.
Performance
The 1.6 litre petrol variant is equipped with a 4 speed automatic transmission. You won’t complain of any noise vibrations from the transmission, while the gear box works fairly well to provide ideal shifts. With a low slung front end, Verna does well to absorb small potholes and broken surfaces. At low speeds, the ride is pretty comfortable, while at high speeds, this sedan does not feel convincing enough.

Honda City

Evolution! That is one word which can be used to describe the 5th generation Honda City, which has a sleek exterior design.
Performance
Known for its performance, the 1.5 i-Vtec engine is not new to the Indian markets. What’s new is a 5 speed automatic transmission on board, which features peddle shifts. These peddle shifters work best when in sports mode. Once on the move, engine vibrations tend to sneak into the cabin, especially at the time when the engine is revved hard. On the whole, the gear box provides perfect shifts. The City is known for its ride and handling. A brilliant suspension setup ensures that broken surfaces and potholes do not pose a threat to its occupants. Also, this sedan can handle turns and curves with ease.

Ford Fiesta

Fiesta aims at bringing forward a driver centric experience, with an improvement in exterior design and cabin features.
Performance
With a 1.5 litre petrol unit on board, the Fiesta is the first sedan to feature a dual clutch automatic transmission, which allows the user to up shift and down shift without any discomfort. The transmission, along with the engine, does not contribute to any vibrations. The Fiesta does well to provide quite a hassle free ride, both within the city as well as on the highway. Soaking in potholes and broken roads comes instantly to this machine. And as for the handling, Fiesta is quite capable of managing turns and curves on the road with ease.

Price List

Honda City AT: R10,62,000 (ex-showroom Delhi)
Hyundai Verna AT: R10,06,729 (ex-showroom Delhi)
Ford Fiesta AT: R9,99,900 (ex-showroom Delhi)

Verdict

With two new kids on the block (Hyundai Verna and Ford Fiesta), the Honda City is still going to be the preferred one due to its brand recognition, value for money and better resale value. However, the other two remain more superior in their distinctive design philosophy, which still leaves the door open for those who would like to experiment with something which is new.
