Sedans battle it out (Honda City vs Hyundai Verna)

Sedans battle it out

When it comes to mid-size segment sedans, auto enthusiasts in India have many options to choose from. But the main factors that play the deciding role for a potential buyer are the car’s style and utility. Two diesel sedans that claim to fulfill both these requirements are the 2014 entries of the Honda City and the Hyundai Verna. While Verna has brought out an upgraded version of their 2011 model, City makes a foray into the diesel segment with their latest version. We go through both the cars and tell you which one is worth your money.

Exteriors
Both the machines have a modern design approach, which is why they are considered segment leaders by many. However, Honda’s new design philosophy takes the City’s legacy one notch higher, providing novelty, especially towards the rear section of the car. Meanwhile, Verna is high on agile looks and a sculpted body line. The front ends of both vehicles feature substantial amount of chrome, though Verna offers LEDs, which is a plus point in terms of looks. Distinctive in their individual profiles, the City and the Verna are at par with each other when it comes to their appeal.

Interiors
This is an area where the dynamics change. The Verna, with its two-tone dash (wood and silver inlays), is quite easy on the eyes. City, on the other hand, has a dash that features a glossy piano black panel, with the overall fit and finish being upmarket. Speaking of equipment levels, both models offer keyless entry and a rear-view camera, to name a few. However, elements such as sunroof, touch screen climate control panel and rear air vents are some additional features in City.

Performance
With similar engine calibration as its previous version, the Verna offers a mute driving experience, though the steering response is not as impressive as one would have liked it to be. It’s good in straight line speeds, but when it comes to handling, especially around corners and curves, the Verna isn’t that great. The City scores well in this department, with minimum body roll as compared to the Verna.

Verdict
The high points of Hyundai Verna are its aggressive looks, equipment trims and refined engine, though the rear space is still a bit of an issue. Otherwise, improvements can be seen in the form of its recent upgrade. On the other hand, Honda City is more of a well-packaged product that offers value for money and an all round performance, with only the engine noise being its negative aspect. Taking all aspects into account, the Honda City is our pick.

Price
Honda City            Rs11.10 lakh
Hyundai Verna      Rs10.72 lakh

‘Race’ Up your Sporty Side! (BMW 530d M Sport)

If you have experienced the BMW 5 Series, get ready to race it up with the sports version of the sedan

The recently launched upgraded version of BMW’s popular 5 Series, has added an M Sports Package. We get behind the wheels to figure out whether it’s just a cosmetic upgrade or potent enough to be a mechanical advance over its predecessor.

Exterior
This latest generation of the 5 Series offers an enhanced exterior design, which now comprises of a larger front grille, chrome surrounds for front fog lamps, re-carved lower air intakes, along with a front and rear apron, and a pair of sleeker tail lamps. Its 18 inch alloy wheels and turn indicator integrated with the side view mirrors, further help in bringing out its overall design.

Interior
Having altered its exterior design, BMW has also spruced up the interiors of this sports model, in order to provide a better level of comfort than before. The first step towards this direction is the inclusion of a new instrument cluster that lights up in red, the moment you slide it into the sports mode. Conversely, the comfort and eco pro driving mode caters to an analog meter. What’s more, the German automaker has gone and improvised the car’s drive system, which now features a bigger 25.8 cm display, along with a track pad available on the controller. This is quite useful for the end user. Two LCD screens for rear passengers comes as a standard fitment. In this version of the 5 Series, the front seats offer better thigh support, with the rear seats providing ample comfort to the passengers.

Engine
There are no drastic changes under the hood; however what has changed is the sedan’s performance output, which now offers 12 bhp more than the previous generation. The torque figure remains the same.

Verdict
5 Series has been one of the bestsellers for BMW and this one is no exception. It is improvised both on the inside as well as the outside, giving it an immense appeal. Its performance is the icing on the cake, completing the package on the whole.

The King of Off-Roading

Ford Endeavour, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuner battle it out to
determine who is the real champ of off-roading

When you go to buy a SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle), what is it exactly that you look out for? Drive, space, comfort or is there something else that fires your imagination? Well for me, it was the “off-road” experience that mattered when I set out to review Ford Endeavour, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuner. So, let’s find out who comes out on top when faced with some serious mud and slush bashing.

Ford Endeavour

The Ford Endeavour has been one of the forerunners ever since its launch back in 2003. Its sheer muscular appearance and massive ground clearance have been its main attractions. Having said that, its updated looks, especially the face lifted front end, does add character. But somehow, when it comes to the drivability factor, especially off-road, the experience isn’t that great. When I took it through an open field run, the Endeavour failed to impress me in the handling department. Its overall ride quality feels a bit compromised, while rest of the features, such as space and comfort, are fairly satisfactory.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport
The latest generation of Pajero Sport scores high on the style and brand quotient meter. Its curvaceous exterior appeal will surely fascinate onlookers, but its real USP is the positive attitude to go anywhere and tackle any sort of terrain quite successfully. The interiors are up-to-date and the comfort factor does not go unnoticed. Having said that, the car’s heavy steering does make city commuting a bit of an issue. However, highway cruising is more suitable for long trips.

Toyota Fortuner
This is one of the most sought after 4 wheelers in the market. Its modern looks, interior space and current features on offer, make it one of the most preferred SUVs around. Its on and off-road capabilities have won it novice as well as hardcore off road enthusiasts. To be precise, its handling and ride characteristics are quite smooth, no matter what comes in its way. Be it city roads or the highway, the Fortuner will not fail to impress you with its on and off-road capabilities.

Verdict
Comparing all three machines on just hardcore off-road capability, it would be Mitubishi Pajero Sport on top, followed by the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. However, since a country like ours is price sensitive, the Endeavour would top the list due to its cheaper price tag, with Fortuner coming in at second, and Pajero Sport at third. On sheer passion and experience, we feel that the Toyota Fortuner is an ideal fit for both on and off-road utilization, as the Pajero Sport comes closest as the next best option.

BMW 1 Series

Style meets Substance

BMW’s 1 series, which is its latest entrant into the premium small car segment, aims to lure car enthusiasts with its stylish looks, power-packed features and top notch performance. We give you a lowdown about this new mean machine.

Exterior
Its dynamic front end sports the signature BMW lines with a kidney-shaped grille, a long bonnet and twin-barrel headlamps with strong shoulder lines. The rear is proportionate to the overall design, highlighting its elegant LED tail lamp clusters.

Interior
Smart is the word that defines the car’s centre console, which is aligned towards the driver. The instrument cluster is neat, with large and clear dials. Touches of metal finish provided to the pedals, along with chunky door handles, further brings out the sportiness from within, as this is the top of the line 118d sports variant. Front and rear seats are really comfortable, with decent amount of head, shoulder and leg room.
Performance
The BMW 1 series offers one petrol (116i) and one diesel (118d) engine. The petrol variant features a  4 cylinder turbocharged 1.6 ltr engine, and the one we drove wasthe 2.0 ltr diesel engine that produces 141bhp with 320 Nm of torque. It caters to an eight speed ZF gearbox that powers the rear wheels, giving the vehicle the flavour of a powerful yet enjoyable hot hatch. There are four driving modes to choose from, out of which, Eco pro which is for economical driving, while City cruising provides for a comfortable ride. Having said that, the Sport and Sport Plus are two modes where the 118d really comes alive and is a pleasure to drive.

Verdict
The BMW 1 Series is the first of its kind offering from the German manufacturer that attempts to sell well in the premium car segment. It offers a strong line up of engines that provide good driving dynamics, thereby satisfying the thrill of a hardcore car enthusiast. This hatchback is well packaged and well suited for daily use. However, the cabin isn’t really special, but still provides a reasonable amount of comfort. Given that all BMWs are driver centric, its pricing is something that can keep away many positional customers, in comparison to the rest of the competition.

On the comparative scale

Mercedes A Class is the nearest and the only rival to the BMW 1 series. It provides a more premium and flush look, especially if you talk about its exterior design. When compared visually, the front end of the A Class immediately stands out to the naked eye in comparison to the 1 series. While the finishing of both set of wheels is almost equal, the cabin of the A Class is far more superior to that of the 1 Series. Rear leg room is something that is non-existent in the Beemer, while Merc still provides reasonable space. From the driving point of view, the 1 series comes out on top, as it provides better handling and performance in comparison to the A Class. To sum it up, if one is looking for a ride with basic interior layout and space, then the 1 series is the best choice. But, if blingy and sporty interiors with decent performance is your cup of tea, then you should go for the A Class.
